Description

In the 12th century this clan possessed lands in Strathtay and, a century later, were occupying lands on Loch Awe and Loch Fyne. Donald MacNaughton opposed King Robert the Bruce and lost most of his possessions. In the reign of King David II they acquired lands in Lewis. Sir Alexander MacNaughton, who was knighted by King James IV, was killed at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. The MacNaughtons were loyal to the Royal House of Stuart and fought for the Restoration of that line of monarchs. The estates passed out of MacNaughton possession about 1691.
