Description

This name has an ecclesiastical origin and in Gaelic is called Mac-an-t-sagairt, meaning "son of the priest". Up to the beginning of the 12th century priests, in minor orders, were permitted to marry. Ferchar MacKinsagart, son of the Red Priest of Applecross, was knighted by King Alexander II in 1215 for his services in helping to suppress an uprising in the ancient Province of Moray. The name is found in many parts of Scotland, including Galloway and Argyll. Badges - Reed Grass, Great Bulrush.
